<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - On The Road Again</image:title>
<image:caption>Jarena Lee was born in Cape May, New Jersey. Her parents were a free Black couple who were very poor. At the age of seven years old, her parents sent her to work as a domestic servant for a white family that lived 60 miles away. Jarena still found time to teach herself to read and write. She moved to Philadelphia as a young adult. Lee had trouble finding a religious community that was right for her until she attended a service at Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church and heard Bishop Richard Allen speak. She was so inspired that she chose to be baptized into the church. Jarena felt like God was calling her to become a preacher. Women were not allowed to speak in most Christian churches in early America. She later wrote: “If the man may preach, because the Savior died for him, why not the woman? seeing he died for her also. Is he not a whole Savior, instead of a half one?” Being silenced in this way caused Jarena mental and physical discomfort. In 1819, a guest preacher in the middle of the sermon stumbled over his words and became too nervous to speak. Jarena stood up and finished his sermon. Richard Allen was so moved by her words that he concluded God had chosen her to be a preacher. She was authorized as the first female minister of the A.M.E. Church. Lee decided to become a missionary. She traveled the country by foot. She preached to all who would listen. As part of a broad spiritual movement called the Second Great Awakening, a period of intense religious enthusiasm from the 1790s to the 1840s. It reached its peak in the 1820s. The Second Great Awakening was not just a religious movement but a social revolution as well. During this time, a powerful message for women was that they were the moral foundation of the new nation. She widened the path for other spiritual women like Sojourner Truth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Brenda Lee Banks was a pioneering African American animator and one of the first Black women to establish a career in professional animation. Born in Los Angeles, she graduated from Fremont High School before attending the California Institute of the Arts, where she balanced her education with early animation work. Banks gracefully handled discrimination because of her gender, her race, and her physical disability. She began her career in the 1970s, contributing to projects like B.C.: The First Thanksgiving. She joined Ralph Bakshi's studio, working on films such as Coonskin, Wizards, and The Lord of the Rings. Later, she lent her talents to major studios like Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera, and Fox, contributing to beloved productions like The Simpsons, The Pirates of Dark Water, Looney Tunes, and King of the Hill. From 1997 to 2005, she served as a layout animator for King of the Hill before stepping away from animation. In 2018, Banks was recognized with the Women in Animation Diversity Award, honoring her decades of contributions to the industry. Known for her reserved nature, she preferred to focus on her work rather than seek public recognition.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - I’M SORRY!!!! - June Bacon-Bercey defied the odds when her University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) adviser suggested she pursue home economics instead of meteorology. She followed her passion and, in 1954, became the first African American woman to earn a bachelor’s degree in meteorology from UCLA. Throughout her career, she worked as an analyst for the National Weather Service and served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, studying nuclear fallout. In 1972, she made history as the first African American female on-air meteorologist and the first African American and female to earn the prestigious American Meteorological Society (AMS) Seal of Approval for broadcast meteorology. Bacon-Bercey’s impact extended beyond her work in meteorology. She co-founded the AMS Board on Women and Minorities, now known as the Board on Representation, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Diversity (BRAID), and she helped open doors for minorities and women in atmospheric sciences. Her legacy includes establishing a meteorology lab at Jackson State University, creating scholarships, and inspiring future generations. Bacon-Bercey’s determination continues to shape the field well into the future.</image:title>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Chasing Food - Leah Chase, known as the "Queen of Creole Cuisine", was a cultural icon who blended food, civil rights activism, and art. Known for serving gumbo and fried chicken to leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin, and President Obama, her New Orleans restaurant, Dooky Chase’s, became a vital gathering place for African Americans during the Jim Crow era and the Civil Rights Movement. Chase was not just a chef but a force for change, feeding Freedom Riders and hosting civil rights meetings despite segregation laws. Born in 1923 in Louisiana, she moved to New Orleans for her education, eventually marrying Edgar “Dooky” Chase Jr. and transforming his family’s sandwich shop into an upscale restaurant for Black patrons. Her cooking skills and drive attracted celebrities, musicians, and civil rights leaders. Throughout her life, she championed the importance of feeding others, education, and preserving African-American culture through art. Mrs. Chase was 54 when she first walked into an art museum. The walls of her restaurant are filled with pieces by artists like Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett and John T. Biggers. It was considered by many to be Louisiana’s best collection of African-American art. Chase inspired Princess Tiana character in Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. Chase’s legacy extends beyond food; she promoted African-American art, joined the New Orleans Museum of Art board, and her restaurant's walls became a gallery for Black artists. Despite hardships, including Hurricane Katrina, which nearly closed her restaurant, Chase persevered, living by the motto to “never say no” and always help others. She passed away in 2019 at 96, leaving behind a powerful legacy of food, culture, and activism.</image:title>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Food As Activism</image:title>
<image:caption>Georgia Gilmore, a cook, midwife, and mother of six, played a pivotal role during the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. Known for her outspoken nature and exceptional cooking, she used her skills to support the movement by selling fried chicken sandwiches to protesters and organizing a network of Black women who sold dinners, cakes, and pies to fund the boycott. To protect their identities, she called the group the “Club From Nowhere,” ensuring the funds appeared anonymously. The name came from the answer provided when others questioned where the food and money came. Her answer was always, "It came from nowhere." After testifying in support of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists, Gilmore lost her job but was encouraged and funded by King to open a restaurant in her home. The restaurant became a hub for civil rights strategizing and fellowship, with her famous pork chops, fried chicken, and pound cake nourishing leaders and activists. Georgia Gilmore was also the lead plaintiff in two landmark Supreme Court cases— Gilmore v. City of Montgomery (1959 and 1974) — that first case ended segregation of city parks and then the second ended the use of use the facilities, mostly for athletic events for white-only schools. Gilmore's journey came full circle when she passed away in 1990 while cooking for the 25th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march. The meal she prepared was served to her mourners, honoring her legacy of resilience and activism through food. It is a blessing that she passed away doing what she loved. <image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Food Justice: From Convenience to Fuel - BEATRICE GRAY</image:title>
<image:caption>In the 1960s, Beatrice Gray, a nutritionist, recognized the growing issue of food insecurity in Southeast Washington, D.C., an area that lacked access to quality grocery stores—what we now refer to as food deserts. Determined to change this, she developed food buyers clubs, which allowed community members to pool their resources and purchase food in bulk at lower prices, creating a stepping stone toward a larger solution. After 18 months of organizing, Gray led the creation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Co-op, a groundbreaking establishment in the fight for food justice. Opened in 1969 within the Arthur Capper public housing project in Capitol Hill, it became the nation’s first cooperative grocery store. This co-op gave residents control over their food sources, offering quality products that were previously unavailable in their neighborhoods. The cooperative, which operated for over a decade into the 1970s, was a pioneering response to the systemic lack of quality food options in Black and other marginalized communities. Her legacy is a powerful reminder of how individual action, when rooted in community needs, can spark lasting change. Her pioneering efforts to combat food deserts in Black and marginalized communities remain an enduring example of grassroots activism and resilience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Celebrating You and Food - Lena Richard</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in 1892, Lena Paul Richard overcame immense challenges to become the first African American to host a 30 minute cooking show (it aired twice a week) in the U.S., on WDSU from October 1949 until her untimely passing in November 1950. Starting her career as a domestic worker in New Orleans, Chef Richard quickly gained a reputation for her cooking skills. She was briefly lured away twice from Louisiana to be head chef in New York for the Bird and Bottle Inn and Travis House in Williamsburg. By 1937, she had opened a cooking school to help Black people secure better jobs in the Jim Crow South. In her catering school she also trained brides and bridesmaids to learn how to cook. She expanded her influence by launching a frozen food company, publishing Lena Richard's Cookbook, and opening two successful restaurants.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Detox & Labor - Lucy Parsons: A Revolutionary Voice in Labor</image:title>
<image:caption>Lucy Parsons (1853–1942) was a formidable anarchist and labor organizer, once described by the Chicago police as “more dangerous than a thousand rioters.” Her contributions include the fight for the eight-hour workday, the founding of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Born in the South, likely to enslaved parents, Parsons moved to Chicago, where she and her husband, Albert Parsons, were key figures in labor movements. Parsons advocated for complete worker ownership and was a driving force behind the first May Day in 1886, where 80,000 workers marched for an eight-hour workday. Though her views were considered extreme, Parsons' legacy teaches us to aim for more than incremental reforms, pushing instead for full equality and dignity for all.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hattie Canty (1933–2012), born in rural Alabama, became one of the most significant strike leaders in U.S. history. After her husband's death in 1975, Canty took a job as a maid at a unionized Las Vegas hotel, which provided her with better wages and benefits. Rising through the ranks, she eventually became the first woman president of Las Vegas Culinary Workers Union Local 226. Canty led one of the longest strikes in U.S. history, lasting over six years, where no striker crossed the picket line. She was also instrumental in creating a culinary training academy, helping workers secure better jobs. Her leadership and resilience strengthened one of the strongest union locals in the country.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thirty years before Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the antislavery movement achieved its first significant victory in the British Parliament. On August 1, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act took effect, ending colonial slavery throughout the British Empire. Over the following three decades, "August First Day," also known as "West India Day" and "Emancipation Day," became the most important annual celebration of emancipation among people of African descent in the northern United States, the British Caribbean, Canada West, and the United Kingdom. This celebration played a crucial role in the popular mobilization against American slavery. Celebrations included parades, church services, speeches, and cultural events, reflecting on the struggle for freedom, honoring ancestors who fought for liberation, and reinforcing the importance of unity and progress within Black communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Be Open Minded - Leontyne Price (1927 ): Opera Singer (Soprano)</image:title>
<image:caption>Mary Violet Leontyne Price grew up in the church, both of her grandfathers serving as Methodist ministers in Laurel, Mississippi where she was born. Following in the footsteps of Sissieretta Jones, Price broke racial barriers and achieved international fame. She didn't decide to pursue a career in music as a singer until after graduating with a bachelors degree in music education at the College of Education and Industrial Arts, now Central State University. Paul Robeson, renowned bass singer and actor, was impressed by Price's voice, and—knowing she was aiming to enroll at Juilliard —worked with the Central State administrators to host a benefit concert to help raise money for her tuition. Price had begun her vocal studies with the goal of developing a concert career, which was the only viable option for African Americans at that time. She studied for four years at New York’s Juilliard School of Music. In the role of Cecilia in the 1952 revival of the opera Four Saints in Three Acts launched her professional career and she never looked back She fell in love with classical music at age 9, having heard Marian Anderson sing a recital while on a school trip. In April 1982, she performed at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, with a program dedicated to Marian Anderson because forty-three years earlier, Anderson had been denied the right to perform there. Price is often described as a "lirico-spinto" soprano with a remarkable 3-1/2 octave range. Her voice has been praised for its vibrancy, glow, velvety texture, and elegance. The timbre of her voice was uniquely personal and instantly recognizable, setting her apart from all others. Price is best known for her leading roles in Porgy & Bess, Aida, and Il Trovatore. Due to her roots in the church, Price always loved singing Negro spirituals, which she called "Black heartbeat music". A little known fact is that Price is a maternal cousin to legendary singers Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston. Leontyne Price, one of the most frequently recorded opera singers, won over 20 Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement award in 1989. She was also honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964, a Kennedy Center Honor in 1980, and the National Medal of the Arts in 1985. In 2008, she was among the first to be named an Opera Honoree by the National Endowment for the Arts. Price's recording of the Negro Spiritual, Deep River .</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Which Comes First?: Race or Gender - Sojourner Truth (1797– 1883): Activist (women and African American rights), abolitionist; author; speaker</image:title>
<image:caption>Sojourner Truth is more than her most notable speech, "Ain't I A Woman." Which was never in the first record of her full speech which was published within a month after she first delivered it. She was originally named Isabella Baumfree and was born into slavery in 1797 in Ulster County, New York. She was sold multiple times starting at age 9 and faced abuse for not understanding English. She grew up speaking Dutch. In 1827, she escaped with her infant daughter, leaving her other children behind. An abolitionist family bought her freedom for $20 and helped her start anew. Truth became the first Black woman to win a lawsuit against a white man, successfully suing for the return of her son, who had been illegally sold. After gaining her freedom, she became a renowned preacher, advocating for faith, women's rights, and the abolition of slavery. Truth worked with notable activists and met President Abraham Lincoln in 1864, who showed her a Bible gifted to him by Black residents of Baltimore. In 2016, the U.S. Treasury planned to feature Truth on the back of the $10 bill to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage. However, the redesign was never released. Sojourner Truth until her death advocated for the rights of African Americans, women, and for multiple reform causes such as prison reform, voting rights and against capital punishment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Which Comes First?: Race or Gender - Nancy Wilson (1937 – 2018)</image:title>
<image:caption>Nancy Wilson's illustrious career spanned over five decades, encompassing roles as a jazz singer, actor, activist, philanthropist, and radio host. Wilson preferred the term "song stylist" over singer, reflecting her unique ability to interpret lyrics with vivid detail and emotional transparency. She recorded more than 50 albums, maintaining a prolific output of two albums per year for Capitol Records from 1959 to 1970, with her most recent album released in 2007. Whitney Houston aptly summarized her enduring legacy during a 1992 tribute: "Nancy Wilson's artistry has outlived the trends of various decades." Wilson was also a dedicated activist in the civil rights movement, participating in the historic 1965 Selma march. Her contributions to civil rights were recognized in 2005 when she was inducted into the International Civil Rights Hall of Fame.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Discrimination Paradox - Coretta Scott King (1927–2006): Author, activist, and civil rights leader</image:title>
<image:caption>Coretta Scott King was a powerful advocate for nonviolent protest and human rights, championing causes that extended beyond racial issues to include gender equality, economic justice, and LGBTQ+ rights. Scott King was a classically trained musician, singer and pianist. She studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Her musical talents were sometimes integrated into her activism, as she used concerts to raise funds for the movement. As an author, she chronicled her experiences and the movement's struggles in her memoir "My Life with Martin Luther King, Jr.," providing valuable insights into the personal and political challenges they faced. She participated in anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa, and she was a vocal critic of U.S. military involvement in conflicts around the world. Her activism was global in scope, and she often spoke out against human rights abuses and advocated for nonviolent solutions to international conflicts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Terry was a poet and storyteller who documented the accounts of Black women in the American Revolutionary War who disguised themselves as men and fought side by side with them against the British, taking care of wounds, working alongside the men in building forts for safety from both the Indians and the British, and played a major role as spies.</image:caption>

Later she served as a nurse at a hospital for African American soldiers in Beaumont, South Carolina and for four years and three months, she served the Union military without pay. <image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Giving Honor - Namahyoke Sockum Curtis (1861–1935)</image:title>
<image:caption>Black American women served as nurses, bravely volunteering despite the risks under the leadership of Namahyoke Sockum Curtis who was African and Native American. During this war, over 75 percent of all deaths were caused by typhoid and yellow fever. Tragically, many Black female nurses were falsely told they were immune to these diseases due to their darker, thicker skin. This misinformation led to numerous casualties. The nurses operated in treacherous conditions in military field hospitals, sometimes just out of range of gunfire. Despite the challenges, the Army highly valued the 32 Black contract nurses, prompting many congressmen to attempt, though unsuccessfully, to establish a permanent corps of Army nurses.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Giving Honor - Black Nurses (1914-1918)</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1917, a co-founder of the Red Cross encouraged Black nurses to enroll in the organization, but they were not accepted until just two months before the war ended in November 1918. African-American women contributed by making bandages, taking over jobs vacated by men who became soldiers, working in hospitals and troop centers, and serving in other relief organizations. Many served in Hostess Houses operated by the Young Women's Christian Association, where they wrote letters home for illiterate soldiers and read incoming mail to them. Among the 3,480 "Y" women volunteers who supported soldiers and sailors overseas, four were Black women. The "Y" played a crucial role in providing recreation by staffing canteens, nursing, sewing, baking, and organizing amusement and educational activities for the soldiers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Giving Honor - Captain Eleanor Yorke (1919–1969)</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1952, Nurse Captain Eleanor Yorke was the sole female passenger among 4,200 men on military transport from the Far East to San Francisco. Captain Yorke had spent over two years in Japan and an additional eight months in Korea treating the war wounded. During the 13-day trip home, her fellow passengers treated her like a queen. Captain Yorke was not only the only woman on board but also one of approximately 600 women—only a few of whom were African American—stationed in Korea throughout the three years of the Korean War. As the Korean War began, the impacts of decades of protest and activism had made minimal progress against racial segregation. The inequities of the “separate-but-equal” doctrine from the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision still influenced public policy, race relations, and white attitudes across much of America.</image:caption>

Of the 35,000 females who went to Desert Storm, an estimated 40% of them were African-Americans. Lt. Jeter was noted for being the only woman and first male or female air defense artillery officer to lead a platoon that destroyed a SCUD missile fired against U.S. military forces during Operation Desert Storm. Lt. Jeter headed an all-male platoon, ordered 13 Patriots (anti-missile missiles) fired, destroying at least two Scuds (Iraqi surface-to-surface missiles).</image:caption>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Master The Mind, Master The Matter - Marjorie Lee Browne's story is one of remarkable determination and resilience. She became a pioneer among African American women in the field of mathematics. Born in 1914 in Memphis, Tennessee, to a family that valued education. Dr. Browne's journey was shaped by an unwavering belief in the power of knowledge and a love for math that pushed her to overcome many obstacles. Such as the societal constraints of racial and gender discrimination. She pursued and completed her undergraduate degree during the Depression. She became an educator at the college level during the school year and in the summers, she remained a student earning her Masters and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. In 1949, she became one of the first African American women to do so. The next black woman to obtain a Ph.D. in Mathematics did not occur until 1960. For 25 years, Dr. Browne was the only person in her department to have a Ph.D. Her focus wasn't about breaking records; it was about what she did with her education.</image:title>

<image:title>Gumbo Newsletter - Reflecting on Core Values: Navigating Life's Choices with Wisdom - Wangari Maathai's legacy is a testament to the transformative power of environmental stewardship intertwined with a commitment to women's rights. As the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Maathai's fervent dedication to planting trees was not just about combating deforestation; it was a profound act of peace and empowerment.</image:title>
<image:caption>By mobilizing women to plant over 51 million trees, Maathai not only rejuvenated the Kenyan landscape but also sowed the seeds of empowerment, economic stability, and environmental consciousness across communities. Her belief in the interconnectedness of human and environmental health galvanized a global movement, reminding us that the act of planting a tree is a declaration of hope and a step towards a more sustainable and equitable world.</image:caption>
