Celebrate Freedom

Volume 1, No. 22

This is going to short and sweet. I am neck deep into the Olympics. I am loving the gold medals earned by the Simones — Biles and Manuel. That is true excellence, power, and creativity. Both have risen like phoenixes from the ashes of the Rio Olympics. It is true testament to down but not out. I am a new fan of Lauren Scruggs, American fencer in her first Olympics. She has a team gold (first-ever American team, male or female, to take the gold medal in the team competition) and an individual silver. I am looking forward to start of track and field.

WISDOM OF THE WEEK

“Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.”

CULTURAL CORNER - CELEBRATING AUGUST 1ST

August First Poster

Thirty years before Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the antislavery movement achieved its first significant victory in the British Parliament. On August 1, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act took effect, ending colonial slavery throughout the British Empire. Over the following three decades, "August First Day," also known as "West India Day" and "Emancipation Day," became the most important annual celebration of emancipation among people of African descent in the northern United States, the British Caribbean, Canada West, and the United Kingdom. This celebration played a crucial role in the popular mobilization against American slavery.

Celebrations included parades, church services, speeches, and cultural events, reflecting on the struggle for freedom, honoring ancestors who fought for liberation, and reinforcing the importance of unity and progress within Black communities.
